End-to-End Solutions for Contribution

DigitalGlue provides multiple systems for transporting high quality professional grade video and audio for contribution links and backhauls such as studio-to-studio, stadium-to-studio, and Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG). Broadcasters, video carriers, network operators, and telecoms require field tested encoders and decoders for transmission of live HD and SD content through open or private networks, fiber, or satellite. It is necessary for live broadcasters to have a high channel count compression density in a single chassis to save rack space and lower energy consumption. Low latency for interviews and sports and multi-vendor interoperability is always a requirement.

VideoFlow DVP Series

VideoFlow’s DVP Protector and Sentinel enable the delivery of live, error-free, high quality video over standard Internet connections

The Internet was never designed to handle Live video broadcast as they are sent as a continuous bit stream, which results in artifacts caused by jitter, and packet loss. Latency of more than a couple of seconds is totally unacceptable by viewers expecting to enjoy the excitement of any live event as it happens.

VideoFlow’s patent pending technology ensures that when delivering content over the internet no packet is lost, and nullifies the jitter caused by transiting the Internet thereby affording the opportunity to use a highly advanced, low cost solution for live, high quality video streams in place of existing, expensive solutions.

The DVP series includes VideoFlow’s 3V technology enabling a point of convergence serving as video aware network gateway. The DVP does not require any external box or service making it perfect for easy and scalable deployment of live video delivery over the Internet. Furthermore, the DVP series is a proven robust, flexible, and cost effective solution to carry live high quality video over long distances, easily competing with satellite and legacy transport networks.

Product

Both the private and the public Internet are challenging environments for providing live HD quality video streaming. Being a statistical network, the Internet will cause bandwidth fluctuation, random packet loss and unpredictable end-to-end delay (jitter), which translates immediately into degradation in the video quality. In addition, the Internet routers are blocking multicast streams used for broadcasting live content.

Current available solutions to stream video involve renting a leased line and a VPN tunnel to transport broadcast quality video. However, this solution will not guarantee error free video and will often require a multi-box solution. VideoFlow’s Digital Video Protection (DVP) product line include VideoFlow’s 3V technology enabling a point of convergence serving as video aware network gateway. It is not requiring any external box or service hence make it perfect for easy and scalable deployment of live video contribution and distribution over the Internet. The DVP product line provide robust, flexible, and cost effective solution to carry live HD video over long distances that easily competes with satellite and legacy transport networks.

The DVP is a Client Server architecture video aware network element optimized for video streaming over the public Internet as well as for video over private networks. It is powered by VideoFlow’s 3V core engine:

VFEC – VideoFlow Error Correction for recovering 100% of packet loss

VideoFlow’s innovative packet recovery technology guarantees 100% protection against packet loss using a robust algorithms suite that is transparent to the original transmitter and receivers, offloading the original sender for better scalability. VideoFlow uses patent-pending, state-of-the-art VideoFlow error correction (VFEC), a unique on-demand packet recovery technique. VideoFlow’s patented packet recovery has multiple layers of protection techniques, all designed with a single goal, which is to recover lost packets using minimum bandwidth.

VFAB – VideoFlow Adaptive Buffering Algorithm compensating for packet jitter

VideoFlow DVP product line offers a built in configurable buffering capacity ranging from 10ms-2000ms for each stream. The Buffer size design handles bursty traffic on one hand and lack of traffic on the other. The DVP can use the buffered video to play out jitter-free video despite high jitter figures, which characterize the public Internet.

VPN – Virtual Private Network tunneling

The DVP is capable of creating a VPN tunnel between the Server (Protector) and the Client (Sentinel). The VPN tunnel enables video streaming across the public Internet. Since the VPN is created by the DVP, there is no need for additional network equipment or special services offered by the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

VideoFlow’s DVP guarantees reliability by invoking auto-box redundancy. The auto box-redundancy scheme is comprised of two identical sets of Protector and Sentinel. One set is active while the other remains “hot” in standby mode. If the active set fails, the hot standby kicks in without missing a beat to offer the ultimate content protection.

Solution

Video Is Super Sensitive – not only does every packet need to arrive – they must arrive on time in order to deliver the quality your viewers demand regardless if it is delivered over the public Internet or over private networks. Up to now the best way to ensure the quality of video streaming was to make sure that you had sufficient bandwidth, an expensive proposition for private networks which cannot be guaranteed over the public Internet.

Now there is a solution. VideoFlow products employ the 3V technology that protect video streaming over the public Internet, as well as over private networks, guaranteed to recover 100% of lost packets and eliminate excessive jitter using minimal overhead bandwidth. VideoFlow provides a viable, cost-effective solution using standard compliant products that enable seamless integration not only with today’s existing networks but with next generation networks as well.

In today’s world, IP (packet transport) networks are becoming the new highway for video streaming. Streaming video over IP deployments is becoming more mature and is being used more by operators, broadcasters and content network distributors who benefit greatly from the net’s fast and easy accessibility making deployments of new services simple and rapid. However, this new capability brings several complexities and inherent challenges to video applications.

IP networks were originally designed to handle data transfer where the criterion for success is complete delivery and not necessarily timely delivery. When transmitting data, IP networks can handle uneven deliveries. Even occasional packet drops can be tolerated by data delivery applications because these applications are built to handle late arrivals and protocols exist (e.g. TCP) to resend the missed packets.

Video on the other hand requires all packets to be delivered regularly and reliably, as the decoder’s video buffers must be fed consistently. MPEG decoders do not handle missing data well, which leads to problems for those sending the video and for end-users who do not experience the quality they expect. There is an increased awareness of the problems that packet loss and network jitter can cause when using any type of IP network. It is a reality and the resulting drop in the quality of experience for the viewer cannot be ignored any longer.

Broadcasters, network operators and content distributors who want to use the public Internet to provide high quality video 24/7 have long faced serious challenges. Now, VideoFlow offers a simple, cost-effective solution that enables them to broadcast quality, jitter-free multicast video streaming over the public Internet. VideoFlow DVP solution reduces expenses traditionally coupled with multicast streaming by offering their 3V technology, reducing overhead expenses for additional bandwidth, the need for expensive VPN services and the need for high-end network equipment.

VideoFlow’s DVP product line provides added value to network operators and content deliverers via 3V technology; actively protecting video against normal network behavior in order to provide viewers with the best possible video quality of experience every time, everyplace and on every capable device. In order to select the most efficient and cost-effective solution that will give the best result, distributors need to focus on the error characteristics rather than concentrating on complex and expansive solutions like adding network engineering or additional hardware. Several factors should be taken into consideration when selecting an error correction solution. Every network is different and each of the solutions described in this paper has its unique benefits based on the network loss profile.
