The Internet was never designed to handle Live video broadcast as they are sent as a continuous bit stream, which results in artifacts caused by jitter, and packet loss. Both the private and the public Internet are challenging environments for providing live HD quality video streaming. Being a statistical network, the Internet will cause bandwidth fluctuation, random packet loss and unpredictable end-to-end delay (jitter), which translates immediately into degradation in the video quality. In addition, the Internet routers are blocking multicast streams used for broadcasting live content.

Current available solutions to stream video involve renting a leased line and a VPN tunnel to transport broadcast quality video. However, this solution will not guarantee error free video and will often require a multi-box solution. VideoFlow’s Digital Video Protection (DVP) product line include VideoFlow’s 3V technology enabling a point of convergence serving as video aware network gateway. It is not requiring any external box or service hence make it perfect for easy and scalable deployment of live video contribution and distribution over the Internet. The DVP is a Client Server architecture video aware network element optimized for video streaming over the public Internet as well as for video over private networks. It is powered by VideoFlow’s 3V core engine:

VFEC – VideoFlow Error Correction for recovering 100% of packet loss

VideoFlow’s innovative packet recovery technology guarantees 100% protection against packet loss using a robust algorithms suite that is transparent to the original transmitter and receivers, offloading the original sender for better scalability. VideoFlow uses patent-pending, state-of-the-art VideoFlow error correction (VFEC), a unique on-demand packet recovery technique. VideoFlow’s patented packet recovery has multiple layers of protection techniques, all designed with a single goal, which is to recover lost packets using minimum bandwidth.

VideoFlow DVP product line offers a built in configurable buffering capacity ranging from 10ms-2000ms for each stream. The Buffer size design handles bursty traffic on one hand and lack of traffic on the other. The DVP can use the buffered video to play out jitter-free video despite high jitter figures, which characterize the public Internet.

VPN – Virtual Private Network tunneling

The DVP is capable of creating a VPN tunnel between the Server (Protector) and the Client (Sentinel). The VPN tunnel enables video streaming across the public Internet. Since the VPN is created by the DVP, there is no need for additional network equipment or special services offered by the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

VideoFlow’s DVP guarantees reliability by invoking auto-box redundancy. The auto box-redundancy scheme is comprised of two identical sets of Protector and Sentinel. One set is active while the other remains “hot” in standby mode. If the active set fails, the hot standby kicks in without missing a beat to offer the ultimate content protection.


Video Is Super Sensitive – not only does every packet need to arrive – they must arrive on time in order to deliver the quality your viewers demand regardless if it is delivered over the public Internet or over private networks. In today’s world, IP (packet transport) networks are becoming the new highway for video streaming. IP networks were originally designed to handle data transfer where the criterion for success is complete delivery and not necessarily timely delivery. There is an increased awareness of the problems that packet loss and network jitter can cause when using any type of IP network. It is a reality and the resulting drop in the quality of experience for the viewer cannot be ignored any longer.
